Looking
for an idyllic country retreat, a classic golf course,
conference venue, and great trout fishing with all the
conveniences and upmarket style of the city? Gowrie
Farm at Nottingham Road in the KZN Midlands has all
this to offer, with a varied selection of affordable
and de luxe accommodation available. Being
situated at the hub of the popular Midlands Meander
tourism route ensures myriad restaurants and coffee-shops,
spas, diverse shopping and cultural attractions as well
as numerous sporting opportunities.

Guy
Smith, an attorney from Pietermaritzburg who developed
Prince’s Grant, and Jubbs Greene, a local farmer,
developed Gowrie Farm in 2006 as a residential estate
and golf course set on a working farm. In
2007 the nine-hole golf course was designed and built.
The course has been built in the traditional manner
with push-up greens and rugged bunkers. These features
were inspired by some of the classis courses visited
by Guy on his trips to Scotland, Ireland and the United
States. The most striking feature being the wild bunkers,
which add interest to this natural layout. Gowrie Farm
is a walking course, unlike most modern golf estates,
which allows one to enjoy the beautiful setting, and
is very much in keeping with the lifestyle of this region.
To
complement the golf are four trout dams situated around
the farm and golf course. Abutting the farm is Brookdale
Health Hydro, well known for it’s outstanding
day spa, which is open to residents of Gowrie Farm.
Five kilometers from Gowrie Farm is Fordoun Spa, which
has recently been recognized as South Africa’s
premier spa and hotel. Gowrie Farm has been designed
for those who seek a simple country lifestyle with some
of the essential elements of modern living. It provides
a complete breakaway from stressful city life, yet remains
within easy commuting distance to some of the major
centers, being one and a half hours from Durban and
approximately four hours from Johannesburg. An added
attraction is that it is ten minutes from schools such
as Michealhouse, Clifton and Kings, with Treverton a
little further away.
